Biography of Pushpalata Das

Pushpalata Das was born on 27 March 1915 in North Lakhimpur, Assam. She was also a distinguished social worker, independence activist and former parliamentarian. He was born to Late Rameshwar Saikia and Mrs. Swarnalata Saikia. Pushpalata received her schooling from Pan Bazaar Girls' High School, Guwahati, from where she was expelled in February 1930 at the age of 14 for being the secretary of an organization called Mukti Sangh. He and his comrades had raised their voices against the death sentence given to Bhagat Singh.


Pushpalata Das passed her intermediate examination from Banaras Hindu University after matriculation as a private student in 1934. He graduated from Political Science at Andhra University and later completed Masters (1938). He then joined Earle Law College to study law but had to leave it because he was imprisoned for his association with 'Individual Satyagraha'. She was a firm believer in women power and courage since childhood. Pushpalata promoted Gandhiji's Khadi concept and formed the Charkha Sangh.


Pushpalata Das was an active member of the National Planning Committee (1940 to 1942). She married Shri Omeo Kumar Das, a social worker, in 1942. She then moved to Tezpur, where she formed Shanti Vahini and Mrityu Vahini with Jyoti Prasad Aggarwal to hoist the national flag at the Gohipur police station premises. But suddenly Kanak Lata had to join this mission and she was killed by the British.


Pushpalata Das strongly opposed Jawaharlal Nehru's plan to include Assam in the group system. He also refused to accept the copper plate given for his contribution in India's freedom struggle.


Post-Independence Career:

  1. Elected as Rajya Sabha member in 1951.

  2. Member of All India Congress Executive Committee in 1959

  3. Member of Assam Legislative Assembly

  4. Chairperson of All India Khadi Board, Assam


She died on November 9, 2003, at the age of 88.
